What is the TIS radiation?

The TIS radiation is the energy coming from the Sun that runs the Earth climate system.
It holds for Total Incoming Solar radiation.

Why do we need to compute the TIS radiation?

To understand the evolution of the Earth climate, it is essential to compute the Earth Radiative Budget, i.e how much energy is coming in and how much is going out?
The term 'how much is coming in' is given by the TIS.

How to compute the TIS radiation?

The TIS is computing from the TSI (Total Solar Irradiance), i.e the power per square meter given by the Sun at one astronomical units. The figure below shows the evolution of the TSI over the last three decades.

where d is the actual distance of the considered point (pixel) to the Sun, and theta the solar zenithal angle.

What kind of TIS data do we get from the CM SAF?

The CM SAF provides three TIS products corresponding to different time averages:
daily mean, monthly mean diurnal cycle and monthly mean.
